Time
for post office control to be transferred to Scotland
The
confirmed closure of seven local post offices by the New
Labour government in London tells us that Its time that
control of the post office network in Scotland was transferred
to the Scottish Parliament.
That
is the view of SNP prospective parliamentary candidate,
John McNally.
The
popular SNP Councillor said,
The
decision by the Post Office network to ignore the needs
as well as the views of seven communities being denied post
office services in the future was the clearest demonstration
yet that the so called consultation exercise was no more
than a sham.
However,
farce was added to tragedy by the comments of local New
Labour MP, Eric Joyce with his demand for a meeting with
First Bus to demand changes to the bus network to deal with
his governments slashing of the number of local post offices.
The
latest attack on the Post Office network is surely the final
nail in the coffin of those who believe that the interest
of Post Office customers are best served by retaining Westminster
control over the network. Its time that management of the
Post Office network in Scotland and its funding was transferred
to Holyrood where there is a record of preserving public
services.
Mr
Joyces abject surrender of a service that is relied
on by our elderly and other vulnerable demonstrates that
his loyalty lies with the Westminster government rather
than the people of the Falkirk constituency.
Despite
the assurance that all submissions would be considered on
their own merit not one single threatened Falkirk post office
was reprieved.
Earlier
SNP MSP, Sandra Whyte, had exposed the fact that the Labour
government had determined that every post office that was
to be reprieved would require another to be identified for
closure.
