SNP Win First Ever STV By-Election


The first ever council by-election fought under the Single Transferable Vote system has seen the SNP gain a council seat from the Conservatives in Aberdeen City Council.

The by-election is not only a landmark in Scotland but also re-affirms the SNP as the largest party in Scotland at local government level with a grand total of 364 to Labour's 348, Conservative 142, Lib Dem, 166, Greens, 8 and Others, 186.

The by-election in the Midstocket / Rosemount Ward of Aberdeen City Council was caused by the death of 77 year old incumbent Tory Councillor.

In first preference votes the result was;

SNP 873
Conservative Party 821
Liberal Democrats 693
Labour 581
Solidarity 31
Independent 20

However, when the minor parties were eliminated from the contest second preferences the final vote was:

SNP 1258
Conservative Party 1122

The result gave the SNP their 13th seat on Aberdeen City, up from 6 prior to May 3 and cements their position within the Administration on the city council.

The by-election also the SNP share of the vote rise by 3.2% while the Labour vote fell by 3.8%.
